Steve Ohanesian is the founder and principal of Pacific Design Studio. Pacific Design Studio specializes in drafting and architectural design for homes and landscapes. Steve has been creating beautiful residences and gardens in the eastern Foothills, on the San Joaquin Valley floor, and along the Central Coast since 1980. My design projects range in scale from small to large, in appearance from modest to lavish, in styling from minimalist to ethnic. As I mentioned, although my primary occupation is design, construction management has become a healthy habit for me. I have found that so much of what is learned through striving for excellence during the design phase refines the day-to-day decision-making component of the otherwise pragmatic and, all too often, disappointing, construction process. Reciprocally, struggles and discoveries encountered during the construction phase positively inform the design professional for his work on the next design project. All of this translates to a higher probability for a successful overall result to the client (homeowner.) Whether or not there is historic significance, fine home results only when the designer’s work proceeds hand-in hand with the construction manager’s work. Together, if well-done, the result will look as it could have at the time of original construction. After my many experiences with the Tower Design Review Committee I have found that I am as happy to present them a sensitively-designed exterior project as they are happy to approve one. Through my commitment to continuing education, I can say unequivocally that the European contemporary aesthetics establish reference points for what we see as trends here in the States many years later. This “time-lag” has been decreasing throughout the years and there is increasing appreciation of the clean, minimal design aesthetic. The products and materials that have long been the domain of Europe’s finest design professionals and builders are now available in the American market and can help express the kitchen or bathroom that we anticipate. Through a collaborative design process, the delicate balance between your home’s traditional aspects, budget constraints, your long-time desire for functionality, and the logistics of the construction process will be optimized.
